Weekly Summary (6/24/13 - 6/30/13)

Not nearly as many individual posts as the prior week, but "A Kindie Manifesto" received a lot of views -- I'd recommend it if you haven't ready it already...

Itty-Bitty Review: Bandwagon - Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights

Bandwagon.jpg

The New York-based musician Joanie Leeds has spent the past few years gradually developing her career as a kindie musician.  She's picked up a band (the Nightlights), a fanbase outside New York, and on her latest album, Bandwagon , she takes some big strides toward finding her own voice in the kindieverse.

Those strides begin with Leeds' voice in particular.  Perhaps it has sounded this good on previous albums and I just was too dim to hear it, but on this album, you can hear just how versatile that voice is, on crunchy garage rock ("Are We There Yet?") or a slow bluesy number ("Use Your Words"), among other tracks.  Whether it's Leeds writing songs that use her voice to more varied effect or producer Dean Jones giving her voice the spotlight or some combination of the two, it pays off nicely.

I hear two Joanies on the album -- one is the Leeds willing to be goofy and write songs laser-targeted at the six-year-old in your life ("Back to School," "Helmet," "UFO"), the Joanie that's always been present on her records.  The other is the singer who writes very child-friendly pop songs (the gorgeous and winsome "Falling," "Little Cloud," and the rousing folk-pop of the title track featuring Rachel Loshak and the Okee Dokee Brothers' Justin Lansing).  This other singer also gets Jonatha Brooke to duet on "Family Tree."  While Leeds has never been solely goofy, this other songwriting approach gets more airtime than before, and I think it's a good thing.

The 41-minute album is most appropriate for kids ages 4 through 8.  You can listen to album clips here.   Bandwagon is my favorite Joanie Leeds album yet, and I get the feeling that the best is yet to come.  Recommended.

[Note: I was provided a copy of the album for possible review.]

When I was at Kindiefest this spring, specifically to do a presentation on great kindie music videos, I found out that Joanie Leeds had invested some money to do a music video.

Well, not a music video.  Fourteen music videos, to be more accurate.

That's right -- thanks to the magic of Craigslist, every song except one from her forthcoming album Bandwagon (out June 25) will have a video.  The first one, "I Love New York," debuted Sunday, and I'm pleased as punch to offer up the world premiere of the second video, for the album's title track, "Bandwagon."  It's one of my favorite tracks from the album, and the foam-based stop-motion animation captures the good feelings from the group sing-along well.  [And, no, I'm not just mentioning it because the animator is some guy named Stefan (Fernandez). ;-) ]  Good stuff, no doubt.

Weekly Summary (3/4/13-3/10/13)

Ever since I changed up my website to feature different areas (the main blog, videos, free music, etc.), the main blog -- the part that most visitors see when they come across the website -- looks more bare than it used to.  And I'm not broadcasting everything on social media, either.  So I'm going to try to post a weekly summary of everything I've posted across the entire website, just so you can see it all at once.

Spring Kid-Starter, er, Kindie Kickstarter Update

It's been a little while since we've had some kindie artists launch Kickstarter campaigns, but we've got a couple campaigns going on, heading toward the homestretch and seeking your help in pushing their own albums over the finish line.

[Edit: If you're looking for information on kid-friendly Kickstarter projects, I now have a whole podcast dedicated to that.  Check out Bake Sale.]

The first is from New York's Joanie Leeds, who's trying to raise $15,000 for the full gamut of costs to record her fifth album for kids, Bandwagon .  (Apropos album title, I suppose, given the financing mechanism.)  As of this writing, Leeds has raised more than $10,000, nearly 68% of her goal.  She's got a week to go (the Kickstarter ends March 12).  There's a bunch of crazy (and crazy-expensive) backer levels, but $12 gets you a digital pre-order of the album, which'll be produced by Dean Jones.

The other project is from Seattle's Brian Vogan, who's seeking $5,000 to mix, master, print, and release his fourth album for families, Let's Go .  The rewards here are less elaborate, but $15 gets you a physical pre-order of the album.  As of today, Vogan has raised more than $2,300, just shy of half of his $5,000 goal.  He's got about 10 days to go (his Kickstarter ends on March 15.

In any case, you may now proceed to crowd-source your kindie.
