World Premiere Video: "I'm a Muskrat" - Esther Crow

For the record, I think muskrats are one of the cutest wild creatures, so when New York City musician Esther Crow reached out to share her new video “I’m a Muskrat,” I was already slightly biased in favor of it.

And luckily, the mid-tempo rocker with an appealing bluesy feel had a video almost as cute as the muskrat itself. It features Crow and her son Vincent decked out in muskrat makeup, acting out the muskrat tendencies she outlines in the song. In the genus kids-song-about-animals, this is definitely one of the better ones. (And if your kids aren’t into being a Disney/Marvel character for Halloween, maybe you can try a muskrat costume.)

You can find “I’m a Muskrat” on her album All Together Now, which was released this summer. Thanks to Esther for letting me world-premiere this song.

Monday Morning Smile: "Heroes" (David Bowie) - Choir! Choir! Choir! feat. David Byrne

You will notice that this website has been... not so active recently.  That's mostly due to "real life" taking up most of my time.  The day job, parenting, a desire to keep myself healthy -- I value all of those things higher than this website.  But the minute I saw the latest post in David Byrne's journal, I knew that it would make its way here.

The post recounts Byrne's experiences singing with Choir! Choir! Choir!, a Canadian group which organizes public singing with formal arrangements.  Recently he sang David Bowie's triumphant "Heroes" in New York City with members of the public briefly rehearsed by Choir! Choir! Choir! and the result is, well, my favorite rendition of the song, and a reminder to me, of the joy and communal feeling that drew me to kids music its performers in the first place.

[Also, to say that I'm really excited to see Byrne on tour this spring is an understatement.  Even if there's no public singalong involved.]

Video: "Say Hey!" - Mil's Trills (World Premiere!)

I know, we're in the midst of winter -- short days, overcast skies, and long sleeves.  (Even in the Arizona desert!)  So every now and then it's nice to see video clips clearly not filmed last week.

Now That We're Friends cover

This brand new video from Amelia Robinson AKA Mil's Trills definitely scratches that midwinter itch.  Filmed via GoPro while tooling around Brooklyn with friends, family, and random strangers on the street, "Say Hey!" from her latest album Now That We're Friends is a bright, sunny pop anthem celebrating friendliness and curiosity about your fellow human beings.  That's a sentiment worth getting behind any time of year.  Maybe specially in winter.

Anyway, the video gets a live biiiiig-screen premiere at Robinson's 7th Annual Winter Bash in Gowanus, Brooklyn this weekend, but I'm happy to be world-premiering the video (edited by Helen Murphy) for you today.  Enjoy!

(And, for what it's worth, I'm much more of a carrot man, myself.)

Video: "Esta Es Tu Tierra (This Land Is Your Land)" - Sonia De Los Santos

Sonia De Los Santos and her band, sometimes in front of America's most potent nineteenth-century symbol the Statue of Liberty, sing Woody Guthrie's classic song from the twentieth century, refashioned for the twenty-first.
